Mother Maria began in the year 2000, after designer Katie Gannon returned from an overseas working holiday in Ireland.
With a degree in Media from the University of Canberra, focusing on Film, Photography, Graphic and Web design, Katie got a head up learning first about the communications sector, then choosing to focus her career more towards the artistic design side of the field.
Her initial label name was Sadhu (influenced by her 3 months spent in India while away) but soon changed the name to "Mother Maria" as a tribute to her late polish grandmother, Maria Duchnicz.
While starting small, Katie sold one off garments to her friends and family, and worked in other jobs for the next 4 years, while learning more about the industry, and studying Clothing Production at the Brisbane North Institute of Tafe.
In 2005, Katie finally quit her Office job to pursue her business on a more serious scale.
Over the past year, Katie has been experimenting with her designs while doing weekly markets which have included Glebe, Bellingen, and Airlie Beach.
She now shows her clothes in several boutiques, and continues to grow her business, hoping her vintage style clothing, use of rare fabrics, and one off special pieces will capture a wider audience across Australia, and maybe eventually the world.
